Question

My MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) very hot

Wondering if anyone else experienced this. MacBook on all day at work plugged in working fine, tethered to iPhone 5. I don't turn it off because as usual it's on again after an hour at home. Just opened the lid and nothing happened - dead, very, very hot MacBook. It's in an incase cover which I removed, and after waiting 10 minutes and holding down the power button for 10 seconds it has started up again.

I have a 2012 MacBook Air that was always in an incase and never had this problem before - is it because of the cover, or is something else wrong?

The MacBook Air has a cooling fan and vents. The MacBook has no fan or vents. It cools by conduction to the bottom skin. So, if it was running while in a case, that would interfere with its cooling.

It's possible that it wasn't in sleep mode while the lid was shut. Look with Activity Monitor for processes that may have prevented it from sleeping.

Thank you, that's helpful - might have been possible that the lid didn't close properly. All good since then, and will bear this in mind in the future.

I encountered the same issue. On the second day's morning after I bought the macbook retina 12inch, I found it very hot on my desk with its lid closed and I could not turn it on. Several minutes later, press the power button and it it back on as normal.

But since then I notice that the battery drain very quickly when the lid is shut (around 1% per hour), so after a night I can see 7-8% battery gone. My old macbook's battery can hold the battery very well when the lid is closed. (about at most 1% battery loss for a night). Don't know that is case for you as well?
